Abstract
CRISPR-Cas has received enormous attention for its use in gene editing. However, Nature did not invent CRISPR-Cas for gene editing purposes. Instead, CRISPR-Cas is an adaptive immune system present in approximately 40% of Bacteria, and almost all Archaea. This talk will briefly introduce the theory of X-ray crystallography. An introduction to the biochemistry of CRISPR-Cas adaptive immunity will then be given, along with examples of the use of X-ray crystallography to determine the function and mechanisms of CRISPR associated (Cas) proteins in Archaeal CRISPR-Cas.
