Abstract
Mining Sustainability is not an oxymoron. It is practiced today and progresses through multidisciplinary and innovative research. After introducing concepts on environmental stewardship, social responsibility and integrated economics, Dr. Young highlights examples from his research. He attributes receiving Montana Tech’s Lifetime Distinguished Research Award to many of these efforts and credits his students and collaborators for their work and inspiration. He shares his thoughts on what others—especially new faculty—need to succeed.

Courtney Young graduated from three premiere mineral institutions: Montana Tech (BS Mineral Processing Engineering); Virginia Tech (MS Mining & Minerals Engineering); and The University of Utah (PhD Metallurgical Engineering). He joined Montana Tech’s faculty in 1993 and continues to be extremely active in professional societies as an educator, officer, author, presenter and organizer. He has 91 publications and 4 patents, has mentored 100 undergraduate re-searchers and 38 graduate students, and has received many honors, including Montana Tech’s 2016 Lifetime Distinguished Researcher Award. Most of his efforts are to advance Mining Sustainability.
