Abstract
Coalbed methane production has the potential to reduce instream flows in Powder River Basin streams. Quantifying this effect is difficult, but important, for water users in both Wyoming and Montana. Isotope tracing of coal aquifer groundwater entering the streams can help.

Elizabeth Meredith has worked in the Billings Office of the MBMG since 2007 and on CBM related issues since 2003. She manages the MBMG groundwater monitoring network in southeastern Mon tana and uses aqueous geochemistry techniques to investigate groundwater issues in eastern Montana.
